The six-week wheel course

From lump of clay to a set of mugs.

Two and a half hours a week, eight people, one teacher. Clay, glazes and firings are all included.

Clay-covered hands shaping a bowl on the wheel

Book the course

1

Week 1

Wedging and centring

Getting the clay to sit still in the middle of the wheel. The hardest bit, and it clicks for everyone eventually.

2

Week 2

Opening and cylinders

Opening up the clay and pulling even walls. You’ll make a lot of cylinders and squash most of them. That’s fine.

3

Week 3

Bowls

Shaping out from the cylinder. Everyone keeps at least one bowl from this week.

4

Week 4

Trimming

Turning last week’s leather-hard pots upside down and carving a foot ring.

5

Week 5

Handles and mugs

Pulling handles and attaching them so they stay on in the kiln.

6

Week 6

Glazing

Dipping your bisque-fired pots in our studio glazes. Collect them three weeks later.

I booked the taster as a birthday present for my wife and ended up signing us both up for the six-week course. We now own far too many slightly wonky mugs.
